it may have ended up being terrible even without Konami ruining it, but now we'll never know. And besides that, PP was butchered by executive meddling. it serves him well when he's drawing up a new premise, but doesn't make for very consistent stories in the long, long term. PW and PP were both huge messes but I think that might just become inevitable when you're as scatter-brained and prone to running with whatever your most recent idea is, as Kojimjams is. even PP had really good systems-based gameplay but I can see you were talking about writing, not game mechanics >Kojima's writing has been iffy since MGS4, his last good Metal Gear was Solid 3 I mean Icefrog's identity is still not publicly known and Dota is one of the most popular video games in history.ĭo you have any idea the software Kojima was developing in the MSX era? or are you just dumping your anime reaction image folder If someone like Toby Fox did all of his interviews with a mask on I don't think I would bat an eye. I think that's less of an East/West phenomenon, and more of a result of DoD/Nier series being these weird passion projects, and Battlefield being corporate pleb fodder, the McDonald's of video games. and to answer the OP's question, I don't think Taro is on track to become "the next Kojima", either. I was just saying, the two aren't really comparable as directors, they don't have very much in common. I wasn't trying to say "Kojima is better than Taro" or anything along those lines. It's served him well, and now he's the most interesting and vibrant personality in Japanese gaming. >Taro, meanwhile, has only steadily improved with time, and never allowed himself to be anything more than a game creator. you think people are just going to forget who it was that made it? MGS2 has stood the test of time, and I think it will continue to do so. >his downward spiral has been one that removed all of his accomplishments. but at this point in his career, Kojima had already made MGS, and Nier: Automata, good as it is, ain't no fuckin MGS. I'm overjoyed that Automata is successful. ![]() the soundtracks are some of the most interesting to ever grace the medium, especially Nier's which is just amazing. ![]() it's notable that this was actually produced in collaboration with Platinum, so it's not clear to me exactly how much Taro himself is to credit for this improvement. Yoko Taro is on his fifth (or is it the fourth? idk about DoD2.) major release that I'm aware of, and for the first time he's managed to direct a game where the gameplay itself was not shitty to the point of seriously weighing down the rest of the product. He had complete creative control over not one, not two, but three different games that are regularly considered serious contenders for the title of "best video game of all time" (MGS 1 2 and 3). the very first game he directed (MG) was groundbreaking, and his third was a masterpiece (MG2). Kojima is a hell of a programmer with a keen sense for gameplay mechanics.
